"From ordianry boy, to amazing saint"
By JonathanHave
you ever wondered if it is easy to be a Saint? Well, Dominic Savio did; and he
found the way to become one. He found his inspiration by hearing Don Bosco say:
1. That it is God's will that each one should become a
saint.
2. That it is easy to become a saint.
3. That there is a great reward waiting in heaven for
those who try to become saints.
Dominic
Savio tried to think how to become a Saint but could not figure it out, so he
became quiet and worried; but sure enough, Don Bosco explained to him how he
could become a Saint:
He
should resume being cheerful.Fulfill
his daily and Christian duties, such as prayers confession and Holy Mass. And
especially not neglect being with his companions in games and recreation. As
soon as Dominic Savio learned this he resolved to become a Saint. He lead a
holy yet simple life, inspirational to everyone.
For example, he had a great fervor to save the souls. He would teach the
student of the oratory catechism on Sundays or at any time when asked. One day
a ignorant companion said to him:
"Why do you bother telling stories like those?” the boy asked asked.
"Why do I bother?" replied Dominic. "I bother because we are
all brothers and we should all help each other in the most important thing of
all, the saving of our souls, which cost the blood of Jesus. I bother because
God himself has urged us to do this and because I know also that, if I can
succeed in saving one soul, I will make sure of saving my own”.
He also had a great love for God, that
he said: "I can't do big things but I want everything to be for the glory of
God."
Another one is his zeal and love for purity. At one time in the Oratory (the
place where Don Bosco founded his school and home for poor boys), there was a
young man showing a dirty magazine to the boys; Dominic Savio on hearing that
such thing was happening, went up to were the young man was, took the magazine
from the hand of the young man and tore the magazine in front of them in silence.
The look on his face was so severe that the boys looked at each other in
silence with awe. He then reproached them for ever doing so by saying:
"What fools we are! God has given us our eyes to admire the wonders of
creation, and we use them to look at the filth that the evil genius of men
produces to ruin souls. You know well enough that one look is enough to stain
your souls, and yet you go feasting your eyes on this”.
"It was only a joke", one of the boys said shamefacedly.
"Fine joke, that can open the way to hell for you! Do you think you
would think it very funny, if you had the misfortune to go there”?
Another said: "Nonsense, there is nothing wrong in looking at pictures
like that”.
"If that is really so, it means that your eyes are already used to
looking at such horrors. That you are used to it does not make it any less
sinful for you. Job was an old man and covered with sores, but he made a
bargain with his eyes that they would never look at anything shameful”.
All were silenced and no one dared to make any further observations.
These virtues such as love of God , zeal for the salvation of souls and love
of purity of mind, body and soul; are but some of the many which Saint Dominic
Savio had, the boy who was born in April,1842; died in March 9, 1857
and was canonized on June 12,1954 by Pope Pius XII. He was called by Pope Pius
XI: "small in size, but a towering giant in spirit” and truly enough he is.
