Packing List for Trailblazers, World Youth Day 2008

How should I pack?
General tips:
1. Bring the minimum you can spare.
2. Remember it will be chilly (July is Australia’s winter… not near as cold as a Michigan winter, however.)
3. Do not forget your passport!

For your convenience, the following list has been compiled. Use it as a guide, nothing more. Looking at this list will remind you of all that you need to bring, and help you leave aside unnecessary things.

Necessary things
Passport and ticket*
Luggage which you can carry**
Little locks for your luggage: airports do not allow you to load luggage with locks; your baggage must be unlocked, but locks are recommended for our stay at the location of our accommodations.
5 days worth of clothing (plan to wash or use a laundromat)
NB: check the Trailblazers dress code first being attentive to modesty; also, it will probably get cool during the day or cold at night, and who knows whether rain will fall or not.
Melbourne, July averages: High 55, Low 42 (F)
Sydney, July averages: High 60, Low46 (F)

Sleeping bag, plus something that can serve as a pillow
Items of toiletry for personal hygiene, cleanliness and appearance
(It is wise to seal plastic bottles of liquids in plastic bags lest they leak in transport)
(Trailblazers suggests that each pilgrim keep a small stow of toilet paper, should any unforeseeable circumstance arise.)
Swim suit (to preserve modesty if ever a situation of public showers arises; Trailblazers pilgrims will visit the coast of Australia, but not to swim)
Large towel
Money: see chart below
Pyjamas
Refillable water bottle
Durable walking shoes; 2 pair would be an extra bonus, if you have space to carry it
Sun screen
Portable radio, to listen to simultaneous translations of events, with or without headphones
Hat to protect from sun (lots of time outside, guys!)
Small bible for your own prayer
Rosary
Name-tags for luggage, and keep one on person with emergency information on it
PRIESTS: Breviary, alb, stole, cincture, oils just in case, any rites books you may need

WYD and Trailblazers will give you:
Magnificat
“Pathfinder” Prayer Book
“Christian Prayer” Liturgy of the Hours book
“Lifeline"” one-page emergency guide, with phone numbers or other instructions
Some will receive walkie-talkies on loan, by groups
Backpack for WYD stuffed with informational goodies

Recommended items:
Credit card (foreign use is not always reliable; bring cash)
Little inflatable mattress, like a pool floater, for under sleeping bag
Insect repellant
Laundry soap and wire/string, if you plan to wash clothes by hand
Very portable umbrella
Photographic camera, with water-proof stowage
Batteries for any gatgets, gismos, thingamajigs or cachy-bachies you may have
Sugar-free gum, and/or breath fresheners
Travel or security belt to carry valuables safely
Food: trail snacks, candies that can endure heat and moisture, jerky meats, vitamins, etc.
Hand wipes (such as Lysol’s or Purell’s) for hygiene’s sake.
Body deodorant
Binoculars, if portable better
Flip-flops are good for the use of showers, for foot hygiene
If you have electrical apparati, voltage adapters or else your items will get burnt out
(Voltage in the USA is 120 V (volts) 60 Hz (herz), voltage in Australia is 240 V 50 Hz; plus, the plugs look funny. See here: http://www.kropla.com/!i.htm.)
A few plastic bags, like from the grocery store: stow shoes, litter, dirty laundry, etc.

Other possible items:
Cell phone [or PDA] (call your carrier to find out whether it will be online in Australia, and what the charges may be)
Portable camping cot, if you can carry it
Easy-to-carry shielding from sun for camp-out on Aug. 20th

Things NOT to bring
iPods and other such means of private entertainment. They may not be used on this trip. Our time together is for prayer, formation, and interacting in friendship with one another.

Footnotes:

* = Arrangements for the delivery of tickets is still pending; Trailblazers may provide all the tickets for all the pilgrims at the airport, to avoid any loss. Regularly visit the “announcements to pilgrims” page for updated information. (Top)
** = On Saturday, when we go out to meet the Pope for vespers, you will stay overnight in the field, to attend Mass with the Pope on Sunday Morning. You will need a means to carry enough to spend the night. You should be able to leave most of your things at the location of your accommodations. (Top)
