The History of Christmas . . .

December 25 is the day we celebrate Christ's Birthday. There was a time however, when this date was celebrated in a very different manner. Saturnalia was the pagan fest day celebrated in Rome on December 25. It was the pagan fest to celebrate the darkest time of the year. It is from there that we receive our tradition of using lights for decoration. The Christian's took this feast and turned it into the Birthday of Christ. They mantained many of the traditions and Christianized them. This was also done with the feast of Lupercalia, a celebration of love. Once again, the early Christian's took this feast and Christianized it. Instead of celerating the secular kind of love, they decided to celebrate sacrificial love. This new fest day was named after a very popular martyr, St. Valentine. Unfortunately, both of these fest days have become reverted to a pagan form of celebration over the years, perhaps more so recently. It is our job as Catholics to elevate these fest days, and all that have lost the dignity they deserve, to their former glory. This Christmas, keep in mind, that although it is nice to receive gifts, you can also give something to Christ. A small token of your love for Him on His 2006th Brithday. Happy Birthday Christ! Merry Christmas to all of you!!
